The Youth Court Questionnaire has now been released by the Nebraska Foster Youth Council and the Through the Eyes of the Child Initiative as a method for children and youth to provide input in their cases.  If you are a Guardian ad Litem, caseworker, Service Coordinator, or someone who works with youth, you are urged to encourage them to complete it.  The Youth Court Questionnaire is intended for any youth with an open CPS case, regardless of age or placement, at anytime and as often as they would like, especially since circumstances frequently change.  Contact Cassy Blakely with questions at 402-817-2003 or cblakely@nebraskachildren.org.

The ABA Center on Children and the Law has co-released a new guide for GALs entitled Engaging Noncustodial Fathers in Child Welfare Cases. More information on engaging fathers can be found at the National Quality Improvement Center on Non-Resident Fathers and the Child Welfare System.

The Nebraska Supreme Court is seeking comments on Case Progression Standards proposed by the Commission on Children in the Courts. For more information, click here. The deadline is October 1, 2010.

Two trainings remaining in 2010 for Phase II (Advanced) Helping Babies from the Bench

What can cause social-emotional delays in infants and toddlers and what are the signs?  Is there any treatment available?  What can we do in our court processes to improve infant/toddler outcomes?

Register for the new Phase II trainings of Helping Babies from the Bench to find out the answers to these questions.  This training is a combination of a morning session (open to anyone) and an afternoon workshop (for core team members only) that addresses implementation of best practices for babies and toddlers into court practice.  An agenda is available to view.  Current Phase II trainings are:

  • Ogallala          September 17th
  • Papillion          November 5th

For more information about the trainings or to register, click here.  If your local team is interested in hosting a Phase II training in your community, please contact Kelli Hauptman.

In re Interest of Emma J. (18 Neb. App. 529, ____ N.W.2d ____, August 10, 2010) A modification of text was made in the opinion of In re Interest of Emma, 18 Neb. App. 389, 782 N.W.2d 330 (2010), namely that a September 30, 2009, where active efforts findings were improperly made was a continuation of a previous order and therefore not final and appealable.  Full Opinion
