Lexie Van Fleet said she’s always had a part-time job and worked hard in school, but she said there’s a stigma that often follows her and other former foster children.
“Foster children aren’t evil. I had no other choice but to enter foster care because my parents couldn’t take care of me,” Van Fleet said.
The college student grew up in rural Nebraska and was removed from her home when she was a teenager.
The 20-year-old is a sociology student at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. She’s also a recent graduate of a new program that helps teach money management to foster children and matches the money they save.
