The purpose of this training was to prepare juvenile court judges, attorneys, CASA, child protective services, and other child protection professionals with the knowledge and skill needed to effectively implement ICWA. Through an expert panel that includes ICWA specialists and tribal representatives, participants are now able to:

  • Discern ICWA myths from facts
  • Describe the history and purpose of ICWA
  • Describe the steps to follow in assessing tribal status and transferring jurisdiction
  • Explain inquiry, notice, "active efforts," and more
  • Discuss how each tribe with Nebraska headquarter handles cases (Omaha, Ponca, Winnebago, and Santee Sioux)
  • Identify ways to improve communication/collaboration among child protective services, CASA, guardian ad litems, county attorneys, and juvenile court judges
